Plastic Recycling Equipment Guide: Choosing Shredders and Granulators for PET, PP, and PE Waste
In recent years, the demand for plastic recycling has grown rapidly, making efficient processing of various plastic waste streams increasingly important. Common materials such as PET bottles, PP containers, and PE films differ significantly in size, rigidity, and volume, requiring tailored equipment selection strategies.

Equipment Selection by Material Type
For rigid plastics such as PET bottles and PP containers, a two-stage process combining shredders and heavy-duty granulators is commonly recommended. UTMACH Single shaft shredders work well for medium throughput and bulky items, while double shaft and four shaft shredders are better suited for high-volume or mixed materials due to their stronger cutting force and stability.
For soft and flexible materials like PE films, UTMACH double shaft shredders or specialized film shredders are preferred to prevent clogging. In the granulation stage, slow-speed granulators are often used to reduce dust and ensure consistent particle size.
Selection by Throughput and Size
Equipment selection should also consider throughput (kg/h or tons per hour) and input size. Large, bulky materials such as whole PET bottles or baled films require pre-shredding. Smaller or pre-cut materials can be fed directly into granulators.
In general:
Single shaft shredders: 100–2000 kg/h, medium-sized materials
Double shaft shredders: 500–5000 kg/h or higher, mixed or complex waste
Four shaft shredders: precise output size control
Heavy-duty granulators: rigid plastics
Medium-speed granulators: general-purpose recycling (esp. Low noise and dust workshop, low output).
Slow-speed granulators: films and delicate applications (esp. Low noise and dust workshop, low output such as the 3D materials like PLA, PETG, ABS, TPU, etc).
Integrated System Recommendation
In practice, a single machine is rarely sufficient. Integrated systems combining shredding and granulation deliver better results. For example, PET bottle recycling lines often use double shaft shredders with heavy-duty granulators, while PE film recycling benefits from single shaft shredders paired with slow-speed granulators.
By properly matching equipment and process flow, businesses can improve efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and lower maintenance costs, gaining a competitive edge in the plastic recycling industry.
